In 1898 after US intervention, Spain agreed to sign Cuba over to the US because of the US’s position of power and the continuous rebellion from Cuba. In 1902, on May 10th, the US granted Cuba independence but retained the right to intervene if democracy was challenged.

  6. History Fulgencio Batista Fidel Castro 1900s Event: Fidel Castro Overthrows Fulgencio Batista FulgencioBatista seized power in Cuba with a bloody coup 3 months before the elections. Fidel Castro, a young lawyer decided to begin a revolution. Castro led a failed attempt to seize Cuba on July 16th, 1953 and was exiled. He returned to Cuba secretly in December 1956 and gathered forces. As his movement grew in size and power, Batista fled on January 1st, 1959. Castro had control of the military and used it to eliminate his opponents until he declared Cuba a socialist state on January 1st, 1961.

  7. History 2000s Event: Raul Castro’s New Reforms In April and May of 2011 Raul Castro announced new reforms to help repair Cuba’s economy. Under these new reforms, Cubans can now buy and sell houses, travel abroad more freely, politicians will be limited to two five year terms, there will be more self-employment, and more cellphone ownership. 9. Jose Marti Jose Marti, a famous Cuban poet, was born in Havana, Cuba in 1853. By age 16 he was writing editorials and poems for local newspapers. In 1896 he was incarcerated, and then exiled to Spain, for writing pieces in support of rebel landowners that were trying to free Cuban slaves from Spanish control. He continued to write and move around Latin America until he returned to Cuba in 1878 with his wife and family. After a year, he was accused of conspiring with others to overthrow Span. He was exiled to Spain, but moved to New York. In New York he raised support for Cuban independence until 1984, when he returned to Cuba with a revolutionary army. Marti was killed in one of the first confrontations upon arrival. He is still revered as a great poet and strong advocate for Cuban independence.

  10. Current Challenges Raul Castro: Making Labor Cuts Political Prisoners: Although the number of political prisoners has dropped recently, the number of long term prisoners has increased from 900 in 2009 to 2,000 in 2010. Prisoners are denied family visits, medical treatment, and sometimes beaten. The conditions are cruel and sometimes prisoners die from lack of food. Labor: The only union in Cuba is the Central de Trabajadores de Cuba. It only ensures that government goals are met and doesn’t protect workers. There has also been huge cuts in the labor force as in April 2010 Raul Castro announced that there were 1 million excess workers in Cuba. He decided to lay of 10% of the government workforce in the first quarter of 2011. Similar to Cuban Prison

  11. Current Challenges Economy: Between 2000 and 2009, Cuba experienced a series of events that created a poor economy. There were lower prices on sugar and nickel, an increase in petroleum costs, hurricanes, a drought on the east half of the island which increased debt, liquidity issues, and lower agricultural and industrial productivity. Only assistance from China and Venezuela has helped keep the Cuban Economy alive. Canada’s exports to Cuba have been on the rise.

  12. Timba A Timba band. Timba is a style of music that is very similar to the salsa. Timba has frequent breaks, changes between major and minor keys, and has more complex rhythms than salsa. It also has more instruments aggressive lyrics, and percussion instruments. It is difficult to dance to but is very popular in Cuba. Drums used in Timba.

  13. US Relations Cuba and the US have had very strained relationships since Fidel Castro and his family assumed power. Fidel was closely associated with the Soviet Union throughout the Cold War, which led to hostile relationship between both countries. The US has tried to intervene and overthrow the Castro family on several occasions including the Bay of Pigs Invasion in 1961. That same year the US placed an embargo on Cuba, and even though in 2010 President Obama opened up more tourism with Cuba, relations remain very fragile.
