Quick Facts • Name: Islamic Republic of Iran • Capital: Tehhran • Location: Middle East, between Iraq and Pakistan • President: Mahmoud Ahmadinejad • Known as Persia until 1935. • It became an Islamic Republic in 1979 after the monarchy was overthrown. Iran achieved its independence on April 1st, 1979 • Has 30 provinces • Government type: Theocratical republic. Legal systems based on  Sharia Law system which is based in the Qur'an (sacred writings). Make laws and policies following the Qur'an. • Suffrage: 18 years of age • Population (as of July 2008)- 65,875,224 • Natural Resources: petroleum, natural gas

  4. Background Info • Ethnicity: Persian (50%), Kurds (7%), Arabs (3%) • Religions: Muslim (98%), 2% Shia and Sunni with a Shia majority • Languages: Persian, Persian dialects, Turkik, Arabic, Turkish • Notoriously known as a sponsor for terrorism and for its weapon proliferation.

  5. Flag The centralized symbol on the flag is a representation of the word Allah. Its tulip shape is a symbol of martyrdom.

Plans are often based on symmetrical layouts featuring rectangular courtyards and halls.” • Materials include heavy clays, heavy plastic earth, masonry, and mud. • Based on several characteristics including introversion, symmetry, and anti-symmetry, homogeneous proportions, structure, and anthropomorphism (Lamassau gods in Persepolis site). • Use of the columned porch, as seen in Persepolis.
