What is Scurvy? • Scurvy is a horrible disease caused by a lack of vitamin C. Scurvy results in the weakening of capillaries, which causes haemorrhages into the tissues, i.e.: skin, bleeding of the gums, loosening of the teeth, anaemia, and causes general weakness.
A Good Diet • Don’t eat too much junk food e.g. chicken nuggets or frankfurter sausages, chocolate is ok occasionally. Try to eat five a day (fruit and veg)
How to Prevent Scurvy • To prevent this happening here are some good sources of vitamin C: • Fruit - lemons, kiwis, mangoes, oranges, limes, grapefruits, tomatoes, cucumbers, green/red peppers, peaches, strawberries, watermelons, blackberries, bananas, apples and grapes. • Vegetables - artichokes, asparagus, avocados, broccoli, carrots, cauliflowers, sweetcorn, mushrooms, potatoes, cabbages, onions, peas and spinach.
Glossary • Capillaries - small blood vessels • Haemorrhages - bleeding from blood vessels • Anaemia - lack of red blood cells
