Chapter Eight: FTP and Downloading Web Resources Goals/Objectives • Learn how to download a file by using anonymous FTP • Know how to locate and download software • Know how to uncompress compressed programs and files • Learn how to use an FTP client program
FTP Overview • FTP (file transfer protocol) can be used to transfer any type of file. • It’s commonly used to distribute software throughout the Internet. • Most of these software programs are available as shareware or freeware. • Uploading a file is when you use FTP to transfer a file from your computer to another.
Downloading a File by Anonymous FTP • The browser makes it possible for you to download files using anonymous FTP without having to type anonymous as a user ID or give a password. • Method 1: View the file first, and then save it using the file menu. • Method 2: Save the hyperlink in a file by using the right mouse button.
Downloading and Working with Files From Software Archives • Software often comes in packages. • Compressed files or packages have names that usually end in .zip. • Self-extracting archives have filenames that end in .exe.
Downloading and Installing Software: Steps • Find the program you want in a software archive. • Create a folder to hold the program on your computer. • Click on the hyperlink in the software archive to the program. • Using the Save As dialog box, determine where to put the file on your computer.
Downloading and Installing Software: Steps, continued • A file name ending in .exe, is usually a self-extracting archive. Locate it using Windows Explorer and double-click on it. It will either install itself or extract its parts into the current directory. • If the file name ends in .zip, then you have to use PKZIP or WinZip to extract the components. • You may need to run a Setup program. • Be sure to check for computer viruses.
Acquiring Antivirus Software • Many antivirus programs are available to the public as shareware. • You can download these programs following the steps discussed previously.
Questions to Ask Before You Download Software • Is the program appropriate for your computer system? • Do you have enough storage space on your disk to hold the software? • Do you meet the licensing requirements? • Do you have permission to install the software?
Questions to Ask, continued • Do you have the software need to install the software you downloaded? • Will the software have a detrimental effect on other software on your computer? • Will you be able to uninstall the program if things don’t go well?
Using an FTP Client Program • When using an FTP client to contact another computer, you’ll need to have certain pieces of information, such as: • The Internet domain name or address of the server, or host • A user name and a password on the host
