Challenges • 2017 retention goal: 70% (up from 60.6% Fall 2012) • The ISU story – For every 5 FTF… • 3 leave w/o a degree; 1 graduates in 4 yrs.; 1 in 4+ yrs. • Inconsistent academic advising • Approx. 50% of undergrads are 1stgeneration and/or Pell recipients • HS to college expectations & norm differences • Teaching needs of freshmen • Increased Board, state, and federal oversight

Challenges • “New Normal” (more with less/growing more with the same) • Institutional Mandates (e.g., SCHs & dashboards) • Millennial student needs (individualized attention but need for larger class size and advising loads) • Mission and best practices link to smaller class sizes for intensive interaction • Staff reductions (e.g., admin. assts.)

More damn administrators Will I have to change? If we have it, does that mean the rest of us are doing something wrong? University College
