In 1964, Joe Jackson (their father) caught son Tito playing with his guitar after a string broke. Tito, Jermaine and Jackie showed an interest in singing and formed their own group with their father naming them "The Jackson Brothers.” IN YOUR OWN WORDS Early Years
In 1966, the group won a talent show at their High School. After several more talent show wins, Joe Jackson booked his sons to perform at several respected music venues including Chicago's Regal Theatre and Harlem's Apollo Theatre, winning the talent competitions on both shows in 1967. Their performances eventually caught the eye of Motown Records and they were signed to a professional record contract in early 1969.

A fourth single, "I'll Be There.” • They were the first recording act to have their first four singles reach the top of the Hot 100. All four singles were almost as popular in other countries as they were in the United States. • After releasing four albums in one year, the Jackson 5 replaced The Supremes as Motown's best-selling group.
As the Jackson Five became Motown's main marketing focus, the label capitalized on the group's youth appeal, licensing dozens of products, including the J5 heart logo located on Johnny Jackson's drum set, the group's album covers, stickers, posters and coloring books, as well as a board game and a Saturday morning cartoon series. • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E1JH0_1m5OU • In order to continue increasing sales, Motown launched Michael Jackson's and Jermaine’s solo careers in 1971.
Decline and Exit • By 1972, despite Michael and Jermaine's solo successes, the Jackson 5's own records began plummeting on the charts. • Focusing their attention on the emerging disco scene, the brothers recorded the charted song, "Get It Together", followed immediately afterwards by their hit, "Dancing Machine", their first to crack the top ten in nearly three years! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KeTVjf85gzs • By 1975, most of the Jacksons decided not to record any more music for Motown. In the early 1980s, Jackson became a dominant figure in popular music. The music videos for his songs, including those of "Beat It", "Billie Jean", and "Thriller" from his 1982 album Thriller, were credited with breaking down racial barriers and with transforming the medium into an art form and promotional tool. • The popularity of these videos helped to bring the then-relatively-new television channel MTV to fame.
A Brief History Continued • His 1987 album Bad had many number 1 hits! Thriller is the best-selling album of all time, with estimated sales of 65 million copies worldwide. Jackson is one of the few artists to have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice. He was also inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Dance Hall of Fame as the first and only dancer from pop and rock music. Thrilling Accomplishments

It was said that Jackson was also diagnosed with lupus.
Both illnesses made his skin sensitive to sunlight. The treatments Jackson used for his condition further lightened his skin tone, and he used a lot of makeup to even out the blotches on his skin. • Jackson claimed he had only two rhinoplasties and no other surgery on his face, although at one point he mentioned having a dimple created in his chin.
He lost weight in the early 1980s because of a change in diet and a desire for "a dancer's body". Witnesses reported that he was often dizzy, and speculated he was suffering from anorexia nervosa. Periods of weight loss would become a recurring problem later in life.

Wacko Jacko • Jackson became the subject of increasingly sensational reports. In 1986, the tabloids ran a story claiming that Jackson slept in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber to slow the aging process. • When Jackson bought a chimpanzee called Bubbles from a laboratory, he was reported to be increasingly detached from reality. • It was reported that Jackson had offered to buy the bones of Joseph Merrick (the "Elephant Man") and, although untrue, Jackson did not deny the story.
Although he initially saw these stories as opportunities for publicity, he stopped leaking untruths to the press as they became more sensational. • Consequently, the media began making up their own stories. • These reports became embedded in the public consciousness, inspiring the nickname "Wacko Jacko", which Jackson hated!
In March 1988, Jackson purchased land near in California, to build the Neverland Ranch at a cost of $17 million. He installed several carnival rides on the property, including a ferris wheel, a carousel, and a roller coaster, as well as a movie theatre and a zoo. A security staff of 40 patrolled the grounds. In 2003, it was valued at approximately $100 Million.

Personal relationships of Michael Jackson • In 1974, a 16-year-old Michael Jackson—who would later be dubbed "The King of Pop"—was introduced for the first time to his future wife by her father, "The King of Rock 'n' Roll", Elvis Presley. Lisa Marie was six at the time, and had been brought to the hotel to watch a show by The Jackson 5, of whom she was a big fan. The young girl was particularly fascinated by lead singer Michael Jackson and his talent at dancing.
Years later the two started talking again. Jackson and Presley were married on May 26, 1994. Presley filed for divorce in early 1996, citing "irreconcilable differences" and noting their date of separation as December 10, 1995. Many feel that this marriage was all a publicity stunt to divert attention away from legal troubles that Michael Jackson was having.
Debbie Rowe met Michael Jackson in the mid-1980s, while working as an assistant for the pop star's dermatologist. Rowe supported Jackson, providing answers to the questions Jackson asked about his medical condition. The pair became good friends; the pop star frequently sent autographed merchandise to the woman, who hung it on the walls of her office. Marriage #2
According to Rowe's friend Tanya Boyd, the dermatologist's assistant would obsess over Jackson, gushing over him and his traits. She would say to her friend, "If people knew him like I knew him, they would not think he was strange. • The Jackson-Rowe friendship would last for several years. • Rowe and the musician would both talk to each other about their unhappy marriages; his with Presley and hers with her husband, a teacher at Hollywood High School.

Their names are Michael Joseph Jackson, Jr. (also known as "Prince Michael"), and Paris. • In 1999 the couple divorced. • There were many rumours about his children including if they actually were his biologically. Legal Trouble • In the summer of 1993, Jackson was accused of child sexual abuse by a 13-year-old boy and his father. • The accusing family demanded payment from Jackson, and the singer initially refused. • The boy’s mother was, however, adamant at the time that there had been no wrongdoing on Jackson's part. • Jackson later used the recording of the mother’s declaration to argue that he was the victim of a jealous father whose only goal was to extort money from the singer. • On January 1, 1994, Jackson settled with the family out of court for $22 million.
2003–05: Second child sexual abuse allegations • Beginning in May 2002, Jackson allowed a documentary film crew, led by British TV personality Martin Bashir, to follow him around nearly everywhere he went. • In a particularly controversial scene, Jackson was seen holding hands and discussing sleeping arrangements with a young boy. • As soon as the documentary aired, the Santa Barbara county attorney's office began a criminal investigation.
After the young boy involved in the documentary and his mother had told investigators that Jackson had behaved improperly with the boy, Jackson was arrested in November 2003, and was charged with seven crimes. • Jackson denied the allegations, saying he had had sleepovers with the boy but that they were not sexual in nature. • The trial lasted five months. • On June 13, 2005, Jackson was acquitted on all charges.
At one point Michael showed up late for court wearing his pyjamas! He seems to not fully understand the importance of the event. When the trial was over he danced on the roof of his car in celebration with the thousands of fans who were waiting for him outside of the courthouse. Dancing in the Streets
