Introduction to WiMAX • IEEE 802.16-2004 standard for fixed broadband wireless access (FBWA) • 256-carrier OFDM; bandwidths 1.25 to 20 MHz; carrier frequencies up to 11 GHz • High data rates with wireless metropolitan area coverage • Deployed in TDD, FDD, or H-FDD configurations • Base Stations (BS) and Subscriber Stations (SS) in PMP configuration • TDD : BS and SS transmit at the same carrier frequency but at different time • FDD: BS and SS transmit on different carrier frequencies at the same time • H-FDD : BS and SS transmit at the same carrier frequency but one at a time

  5. General WiMAX Frame Downlink (DL) sub frame :Preamble, Header and one or more DL bursts and transmitted by BS Uplink sub frame : Slots for initial ranging, BW request and data transmissions from various SSs.
