  3. Design Materials • The Four Basic Types of Design Materials are…. • Line Flowers • Mass Flowers • Form Flowers • Filler Flowers

  4. Line Flowers • Tall spike of flowers with florets blooming along the stem. • Create the outline for an arrangement & establish the height and width as well as curvilinear lines. • Examples: • Snapdragons • Gladiolus

  5. SNAPDRAGONS GLADIOLUS Line Flowers

  6. Mass Flowers • Have the flower head on the terminal end of the stem. • Draw attention to the focal point and add mass and weight to the arrangement. • Cover the floral form and help fill empty areas with flowers. • Examples: • Carnations • Roses • Chrysanthemums

  7. CARNATIONS ROSES CHRYSANTHEMUMS Mass Flowers

  8. Form Flowers • Unique in shape or color such as…. • Bird of paradise • Orchids • Create the accent or focal point or area of the arrangement to attract the viewer’s attention.

  9. BIRD OF PARADISE ORCHIDS Form Flowers

  10. Filler Flowers • Have sprays of flowers such as baby’s breath and statice, or they are like ferns. • Are used to fill empty spaces and to accent the other floral material within the arrangement. • Also used to cover or hide the mechanics of the arrangement including the frame, supports, ties, and etc.

  11. STATICE STATICE BABY’S BREATH Filler Flowers

  12. Floral Design Shapes

  13. Floral Design Shapes • Round • Flower arrangement is basically round in shape.

  14. Floral Design Shapes • Oval • Flowers make an oval shaped arrangement.

  15. Floral Design Shapes • Fan • Flowers make a fan or semicircle shaped arrangement.

  16. Floral Design Shapes • Triangle • Equilateral • All three sides are the same length. • Asymmetrical • Sides of different lengths.

  17. Floral Design Shapes • Right angle • Flowers make L shape.

  18. Floral Design Shapes • Inverted-T • The flowers make an upside down T (⊥).

  19. Floral Design Shapes • Vertical • Straight up, in a bud vase. • Tall vertically, narrow horizontally.

  20. Floral Design Shapes • Horizontal • Long horizontally and short vertically.

  21. Floral Design Shapes • Diagonal • Halfway between vertical and horizontal.

  22. Floral Design Shapes • Crescent • Shaped like a quarter moon.

  23. Floral Design Shapes • Hogarth Curve • Shaped like an S curve.

  24. Techniques in Floral Design

  25. Design Principles • Balance • When the flower size and container flow together and complement each other.

  26. Design Principles • Focal point • Creates the accent and interest to catch the eye.

  27. Design Principles • Proportion • Keeps relative size, color, and texture of the flowers to create a pleasing arrangement. • Floral designs should be at least 1 ½ to 2 times the height or width of the container.

  28. Design Principles - Proportion

  29. Design Principles • Scale • The principle that the design must be in proportion to the surrounding area where it is placed.

  30. Design Principles • Accent • Used to catch and draw attention to the design.

  31. Design Principles • Repetition • Accentuates the flowers and colors by repeating their use throughout the design.

  32. Design Principles • Rhythm • Creates a sense of continuity or flowing together.

  33. Design Principles • Harmony • When all parts flow together to give a completed look to the arrangement.

  34. Design Principles • Unity • When the flowers complement each other through color, size, shape.

  35. Design Techniques • Step 1 • Select a design shape.

  36. Design Techniques • Step 2 • Select appropriate container, • Cut floral form, • Attach to container. • Step 3 • Set container and foam in water for 20 minutes. • Step 4 • Select fern or other filler and arrange in foam to cover foam and extend at least 1 ½ times width of container.

  37. Design Techniques (Steps 2-4)

  38. Design Techniques • Step 5 • Insert flower to make arrangement desired height. • Step 6 • Insert more flowers to make design outline & focal point. • Step 7 • Add other flowers as needed to make arrangement.

  39. Design Techniques (Steps 5-7)

  40. Design Techniques • Step 8 • Arrange filler flowers such as baby’s breath to give a completed appearance.
