Centralized Clinical PlacementsProcesses and Practices Nursing Initiative Advisory Committee Update April 10, 2007
Overview BHE Nursing Education/Practice Partnership Survey • Clinical Placements identified as significant issue in improving the quality of nursing education across the state. • Time in arranging and managing clinical placements was seen as burdensome to facilities and schools of nursing. • Statewide, there is an inadequate number of clinical sites in Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Behavioral/Mental Health. • The competition for sites between schools of nursing was a major issue in every region of the state.
Initial CCP Database • Launched CCP database and web site July 2006 • Data from: • 1 region – Northeast-Central • 26 Hospitals/Hospital Systems • 18 Nursing Programs • Started with 668 clinical placements • All were RN placements • All placements were in hospitals
Expanding CCP Database • Expanded Northeast-Central region to include: • LPN programs • At colleges and technical/vocational schools • Rehabilitation and long-term care facilities • Boston-based nursing programs with clinical placements at participating health care organizations
Summary CCP Database • Today, the database includes: • 31 Health care organizations • 23 Nursing Programs • 922 clinical placements • RN and LPN students • All 4 terms • Fall; Winter; Spring and Summer • Group and preceptorship clinical placements • Have added 254 placements for a 38% increase in placements since launch.
The CCP Database Expansion • Expanded to include 2 additional regions • Southeastern Mass • 44 health care organizations • 20 nursing programs • Western Mass • 20 healthcare organizations • 8 nursing programs
Expanded Participation in CCP • In next few months, as expansion completed:
Additional CCP Web Site Components • Shared Documents • Student Clinical Passport – in use • Faculty Clinical Passport – in use • Additional Shared Documents Suggestions • Online Clinical Orientation for Students • Unified Clinical Placement Contract
Ongoing Efforts and Development • Pre Assessment and Post Implementation Evaluation • Web Site Enhancements • Simplify process of updating placement data • Reduce the possibility of data errors • Give users better visibility and control of change process • Facilitate communication between clinical sites, nursing programs & nurse coordinator • Prevent unauthorized/duplicate placement requests and submissions
Ongoing Efforts and Development • Attracting National Attention for the Massachusetts CCP model • Presentations of the Massachusetts CCP model : • National Professional Nurse Educators’ Conference, October 2006 • Greater Metropolitan Chicago Hospital Council, December 2006 • Rhode Island Hospital Association, May 2007 • Dartmouth Hitchcock/St. Anslem’s Annual Conference for Nurse Educators in Practice and Education, May 2007
