  5. General “Journal” Issues • Serials cuts in 86, 90 and 00 due to flat budget • As few as 2,846 titles • Had been until 00-01: • High percentage of non-clinical, non-domestic journals • Over 30% inflation in 96-97

  6. Increases to Medical Library budget Commitment to acquiring journals in disciplines and areas of ‘excellence’ Values: Commensurate with our research status Accessible to our primary clientele Rationalized campus-wide selection Rebuilding Program

  11. Downsides • Inflationary increases to subscriptions • Cost of e-access when calculated by FTE • Restrictions on ILL lending with data responsibilities on lender

  12. Downsides • Different staff involved, overall increase in staff time - In serials - At service points - In central tech services

  13. Downsides • Additional costs for e-access are staggering and unpredictable • Communication from publishers is haphazard due to multiple offices at WSU, etc.

  14. Current Planning • Decisions re: paper v. e-only • Tied to physical building issues • Responsibilities to library community and secondary clientele, SE MI residents
