E-JOURNALS AT HDGH
LIBRARY FACTS • 3 Libraries on 2 hospital sites • Plans were to merge into 1 library • Physical space limitations • Solutions included : E-journals
ACQUISITION • Started with full-text titles included in EbscoMed Databases • Online journals that were provided complimentary from the publishers with the paper copy • Selected online journals to one IP address or password within the hospital library
LICENSING • Vendor directed • IP or Password ( may not be able to choose password – rather assigned by vendor) • Pricing may depend on number of computers, users, or patient admissions and discharges per year. • Institutional pricing is higher than physician pricing
Budget Issues • Cost of e-journals within the entire journal budget – no increase $ • Cost of e-journals is often higher than paper copy • Printing costs for articles – paper and toner
ACCESS • Currently only within the library • NOT licensed for delivery by email to our staff • Graphics not easily printed on some printers – often requires script and large memory options • Can more quickly pick up the paper copy to read than download the PDF for printing
MARKETING • EbscoMed – holdings statement notifies the user of e-journal, paper copy, cd-rom, and microform holdings • Online line card catalog – format notes
PAINS • Archiving • Firewalls • E-Copy not always identical to print copy • Multiple passwords • IP issues • Marketing ( Users are still looking for paper copies)
POSITIVES • Currency • No lost issues • Graphics are enhanced quality • EbscoMed titles available 24 hours a day to all our staff wherever they are with an internet connection • Clean copies – larger font than original • Space saver
