  4. Recent highlights and news Characterization and testing of the first 6 sets- 610 PMT’s are done. Working on the 7th batch. 8th batch just arrived bringing our total to 890 PMT’s. • We started with the batch measurements- focusing on specialty tests: • surface nonuniformity tests (already presented GJ) • Afterpulse tests (already presented GF) • Single photoelectron tests (already presented by Jared) • We started with the double pulse linearity measurements using the first board from Sergey. We will repeat these measurements with the latest version. The UMD test station is doing well and good results on the cross check.

  5. PMT Tests at Iowa and UMD • Total 890 PMTs are delivered. Standard tests (timing, gain, dark current, linearity) are done for first six batches. We are running special tests (surface scan, single photoelectron, afterpulse) . • We prepared detailed manuals for PMT tests: http://www.physics.uiowa.edu/~uakgun/temp/PMT_TEST_MANUALS/ • We have recently started life-time measurements with two independent set-ups. ( Iowa Photodetector lab and U.Akgun Lab)

  8. Set up The setup and the test procedure is very similar to CMS IN 2002/030, where the Hamamatsu R7525 double pulse tests were described. Blue LED Light guide PMT Filter wheel

  9. Serial # JA0475 9300 photoelectron Pulse Ratio Area of the first pulse (nVs)

  10. New HF Upgrade Power Supply • We have an arrangement with our Bulgarian group to prototype new power supply system for the HF. We hope receive this prototype by the end of March 2012. • We are also looking into the commercial solutions (Swalek will look into this)

  11. New Milestones • HF PMT 1-Jun-11 Sleeve Design Approval - Internal HCAL Review • 5-Oct-11 New Date • HF PMT 15-Jun-11 HCAL Sign Off of Pre-Production ROBOX • 5- Oct-11 New Date • HF PMT 15-Sep-11 New Cable Scheme Design Approval • HCAL Review 16-Nov-11 New Date • HF PMT 31-Oct-11 PMT Testing 50% Comp • 1-Jan-12 New Date • HF PMT 8-Dec-11 Production Readiness Review (Dry Run-Review) • CMS PRR 12-Jan-12 New Date (this is full system, including HV Power Supplies)

  12. Test Beam 2011 • We had a very successful run in July 2011. • Our “Punch Through Studies” at the Test Beam was also successful. • We had two presentations from our group to the HCAL Test Beam meeting on September 6. • 1-HF TB2011 Results by Burak Bilki-Taylan Yetkin ( Presentation by Taylan) • 2-HCAL July 2011 Test BeamReports Self Trigger Runs by E. A.Albayrak, G.Aydin, Y.Gunaydin (Presentation by Asli)

  13. Test Beam July 2011 • We have tested the new PMTs inside a RBX with different readout options. • During the test electron, muon, and pion beams were used. • Since the characteristics of the new PMT were studied in previous test beams, we focused on the RBX itself. • The primary goal of the test was to study RBX as a whole unit with Čerenkov light or punch through particles. • We observed comparable behavior from each PMT (i.e. similar p.e. output). • Preliminary look suggests no electronic malfunctioning with 2-anode and 4-anode readouts. • Previous studies for filtering and recovery (TB2010) were briefly repeated with the new data for verification.

  14. Run Plan October Test Beam • Proposal for the run plan: • 1. Electron -> absorber -> bundle -> New RBX --- 80 GeV and 6-7 X0 are OK as before. We need to test the characteristics of both fiber ends first, then run over all PMTs in pairs. • 2. Muon -> New RBX without light guides --- need statistics for better algorithm tests, scan through the board. • 3. A few electron/pion energies -> EM calorimeter with 4A PMT --- will go for a shower leakage probability estimator and an algorithm performance monitor. we also need an electron energy scan. • 4. Pion -> absorber -> New RBX without light guides --- I do not think that we terribly need this, what we already have is really good. We can do this with a better table alignment.

  15. Bulgarian HV system • 1. Production of proto: they would need of about 2000 USD and accept the schedule -March 2012. • 2. About full production: For estimate its cost, we have to specify the number of crates and the number of modules,. At CERN we spoke of 12 modules and 6 crates, Also, after the prototype is done, they could clarify the possibility of using the old crates and if yes, for how many modules inside the crate. • Approximative prices of the different parts of the system are - 9 channel module - about 1000 USD - 1 crate with power supply - about 850 USD - 1 crate controller - about 150 USD. • 3. About the documentation and support : We will discuss further the volume and the contents of the documentation, but it will include the Instruction for exploitation and mechanical and electrical schemes of all PC boards in the crate as well as scheme of the connections between them. About the support they foresee a free of charge support during the first year of the exploitation. After that their specialist shall come to CERN when it is necessary, but the travel and leaving expenses have to be paid by the US Team at CERN.

  16. HV Specs • HF Multianode PMT Power Supply Upgrade. Supply currents for the existing prototype Base Board were revisited, and decreased as follows: • a. 1000V - 5mA • b. 200V - 5mA • c. 100V - 10mA • There are 4 sectors at each end with 9 ROBOXes in each. ROBOXes have 3 boards in each, and for each sector there are 3 sets of 1000/200/100V power - for different radii of the detector. • Thus, for each end there should be a crate with 4 modules, each having three sets of 1000/200/100V power. • There is a possibility to have instead 2 crates with 2 modules in each, if that allows to use existing crate power supplie s without their power increase.

  22. New Cable Tests

  23. Alexi, Ianos, Richard and Terry • Phase scan was done, in total 12 points from 0ns delay up to 22ns with 2 ns step and new cable behaves as expected, no reflections, no signal distortion seen with PMT and QIE readout. • Six time slices were read out, signal in TS 2Before test beam starts, and before ROBOX with new PMT’s modification, our group will repeat these tests with old cable, modify ROBOX to connect new cable and do once more these tests to compare old and new cables.

  24. ROBOX Test Stand • We should start to equip the ROBOX test stand at P5 during summer 2012.By that time we have define what kind of data we have to take : LASER,LED – at different intensities, different HV etc. • The equipment needed – MiniDAQ, Front End, HV(modified Bulgarian PSU), LV, cables (all sort – HV, LV, ROBOX to QIE), LASER system, Digitial Scopes.

  25. Alexi Proposal for Pt5 • Two fully equipped HF QIE crate. We can connect 6 ROBOX at same time. That makes: Two crates, 24 QIE cards, 2 CCM, 1 CM. • Fully equipped MiniDAQ – HTR’s, DCC, all supporting electronics like trigger boards, TTC, fibers etc. • One fully equipped QIE crate occupies 1.5 HTR With two QIE crate (24 QIE card) we will need 3 HTR + one DCC etc.
