MISSION STATEMENT Provide All Students A Seamless Education System Driven By A Student Education Occupation Plan (SEOP) Through Competency-Based Instruction Culminating In Essential Life Skills, Certified Occupational Skills, And Meaningful Employment.
Educator Licensing Two important pieces: • License • Endorsement(s)
Educator Licensing • All teachers must have a license to teach. • Secondary Education License • Issued to teachers who complete a university teacher education preparation program or who take an Alternative Route to Licensure (ARL). • May teach HS courses by demonstrating competency (request endorsements). • Career & Technical Education (CTE) License • Issued to teachers who qualify through a combination of related post-secondary courses/degrees and/or related health care work experience. • 6-year criteria. • CTE-APP (Alternative Preparation Program). • Only CTE endorsements can be attached to CTE licenses.
Educator License Levels • Level 1 • Entry-level issued for three years only. • May be extended only if progress towards the level 2 requirements have been made. • Level 2 • To advance to level 2, teachers must complete 3 years of successful teaching experiences in their endorsement area(s) and obtain a recommendation from their employing school district. • Must renew every 5 years. • Level 3 • Must have doctorate degree or National Board Certification (teaching not health care) in educator’s area of practice. • Must renew every 7 years.
CTE – APP Advancement • You have 3 years to: • Complete the USOE CTE New Teacher Academy (3 sessions) • Complete Pedagogy Course Requirements (15 college credits) • Instruction, Technology, Assessment & Planning • Child/Adolescent Development, Classroom Mgt • Introduction to Special Education • Foundations of Learning & Teaching Diverse Pops • Special Topics in Education: Literacy Strategies
CTE – APP Advancement • Complete HS Endorsement Requirements • Attend HS New Teacher Orientation (today). • Attend Annual HS Summer Conference (3 years). • *Obtain and Maintain Current CPR Certification. • *Obtain and Maintain Current First Aid Certification. • Complete the EYE for Quality Teaching Program • Work with an assigned mentor. • Score at least 160 on the Teaching Praxis Exam. • Complete 3 years of successful teaching with evaluations. • Compile a working Portfolio as defined by EYE. • Obtain a favorable recommendation from employing school district.
Renewing Level 2 Licenses • Every five years • 100 points • Keep all professional development documentation
Teaching Endorsements • Teaching assignments must match your endorsement(s). • Must show evidence of related education and/or work experience for each endorsement area. • SAEP (State Approved Endorsement Plan) • Can be issued if teacher needs to demonstrate additional competency to teach a particular course/program. • Issued for all first-time HS endorsements • Intro to HS • MAP (Adv HS, Med Term) • Biotechnology • Exercise Science • EMT • Nurse Asst • Dental Asst • Medical Asst • Med Office Admin Asst • Pharmacy Tech • Med Records Tech • Med Transcriptionist • Optical Tech • Surgical Tech
CTE Funding • Perkins (Federal) $14m • 85% (60%-districts & 40%-higher ed.) • Performance Measures • Skill Certification • 10% (leadership & development) • 5% (administration) • State (Add-on) $52m • CTSO $415,000 • State (Maintenance of Effort) $43m • Membership
CTE Scholarships • http://www.schools.utah.gov/cte/scholarships.html • A CTE Scholarship is good for one year of tuition at participating Utah Colleges/ Universities only. • It is intended for students with the following post high school goals: • School to work degrees and certificate trainings that require a 2 year degree orless. • Ex: Associate in Nursing – WSU, SLCC, CEU, UVU, SUU, etc. • A four year teaching degree in a CTE area. • Watch for an email in the spring – encourage your students to apply!
