What is a Relay? A relay is a component used as an electronic switch for various control applications. There are three types of Relays: • Electro-Mechanical Relay (EMR) - Signaling done using electromagnetic, contains mechanical moving parts for switching • Photo Coupler Solid State Relay (PC/SSR) - Signaling done by LED & light sensor, no moving parts for switching • Piezoelectric Ceramic Coupler Solid State Relay (PCC/SSR) - Signaling done by mechanical wave transmission at resonance frequency, no moving parts for switching

Coupler is a critical component in SSR It couples the electrical signal generated from the controller to the receiver through an isolated connection to avoid the interferences caused by the electrical signal. How PCC Works The Piezoelectric Ceramic Coupler (PCC) is made of a piezoelectric plate, which acts as a coupler when stimulated at the resonance frequencies. The frequencies used are above the audible range, typically about 35 KHz or 70 KHz. At one end of the plate, the input AC signal is converted to mechanical strain using the converse piezoelectric effect. At the other end of the plate, the resultant strain is converted back to an electric signal using the piezoelectric effect. As a result, an isolated perfect sinusoidal output signal can be generated to control a semiconductor switching device.
