Social Change From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Impact of Internet in regards to Social Change [edit] The building of networks via the internet helps foster social change. There is a socialrevolution now occurring on multiple platforms. As referenced in the annual review by the department of Sociology at Princeton; internet tends to compliment rather than displace existing media and patterns of behavior(1). Social movements have been going on since the beginning of time with foundations of cultural, economic, religious forces. Originally one dimensional, the internet specifically social media has catapulted these movements to reach multiple groups of people at such in such a short period of time. Social media permeates almost every aspect of our lives. This is how we manage and upkeep out relationships (3) Platforms such as Twitter enables direct engagement with individuals and groups who have the power to effect change(3). We have built a dialogue in which we communicate both online and offline. Over the years we have seen protests from across the world, natural disasters like the earthquake in Haiti that have enticed online users to participant in acts of social change.(2) Social change on any platform requires action. But internet as a whole promotes social change on a larger scale.
