Themes • There are variations in judgments and social orientations within cultures. • The mix of orientations is not solely a matter of estimating how much of one or the other. • The inequalities and asymmetrical reciprocity implicit in the differential distribution of power and resources reflected in different attributions of autonomy and dependence are not shared across a culture. • The disagreements with and discontents about norms, social practices, and social arrangements can , and frequently do result in efforts for change.
Woman in Society Do Not Hold Positions of Equality with Males • Woman are viewed as property • Sexual fidelity is required of woman but not of men • Male children have a higher societal value then female children • Females are oppressed by the males in power resulting in poor treatment from an early age. • Females have a limited voice and few options within society • The cost of female children can be a burden for families

China • Woman have systematically lost their jobs and are required to work in the home • Men may work from 7am-11pm • Emotional disconnection in marriages
Islamic World • Women are really crushed and maltreated in this society: • Women’s activities were restricted by men such as how to dress and work • Polygomy is encouraged • “Men realize that religion gives them a title and feel automatically powerful
