  1. Carbohydrates Amanda & Antoinette

  2. What is a Carbohydrate? • A carbohydrate is a compound made up of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. The most basic carbohydrates are called simple sugars, while the more complex carbohydrates are called starch. Carbs are a source of energy.

  3. What are Simple and Complex Carbohydrates? • Simple sugars (or basic carbohydrates) include honey, jelly, syrup, and fruit. These are relatively small compounds. When several of these simple sugars are linked together, they form complex carbohydrates. Complex carbs are found in quality foods such as grains, vegetables, breads, and seeds

  4. Simple Carbs

  5. Complex Carbs

  6. What are Carbohydrates used for in the body? • Carbohydrates are the main energy source for the body. Animals (including humans) break down carbohydrates during the process of metabolism to release energy

  7. What are the horse’s requirements for Carbohydrates? • Horses require carbs for energy.

  8. How are Carbohydrates absorbed and excreted? • Carbohydrate absorption and digestion occur mainly in the small intestine. Digestive enzymes attack carbs and convert them to simple sugars.

  9. Examples of Carbohydrates & how they are fed • Starch is the major carbohydrate found in legume hay like alfalfa. In Alfalfa sprouts, there is 1.5g carbs.

  10. Toxicity • No toxicity exists for carbohydrates.

  11. Deficiency • When no carbs are consumed, protein takes it’s place. But the excessive breakdown of protein can lead to ketones in the liver. These people experience the same symptoms of starvation.
