What is seed dispersal? • Seeds are being scattered away from their parent plant • Seed dispersal is important for a number of reasons .By moving away from the plant , the potential a new plant faces a reduction in competition for limited sources.
Dispersal by splitting of fruits • Seeds are released by explosive action. • These seeds shoot out into the air in different directions several meters away from their parent plant. • A balsam fruit bursts open when the fruit is ripe. • The African tulip and kapok fruits stick out above the leaves split open to release the winged seeds.
Dispersal by wind • These fruits and seeds are usually dry, tiny and light. • Some seeds have hairs so that they can be carried away by the wind. • Some seeds have wing-like structures which can help them to float away in the wind
Dispersal by water • These seeds can usually float on water and are carried along the streams, rivers and sea. • Seeds and fruits dispersed by this method are covered by spongy or fibrous layers which trap air and makes seeds or fruits buoyant. • They usually have a waterproof covering. • The fruits or seeds can travel thousands of kilometres on water until they land on grounds suitable for growth.
Dispersal by animals • Animals eat the fleshy parts along with the seeds or throw the seeds out. • Some of these seeds have hooks or stiff hairs which enable them to stick onto the fur of animals which will drop off as the animals move about
Examples of how some plants disperse their seeds • Wind : Orchid , Clematis , Lalang , Angsana and Shorea • Water : Coconut , Nipah , Pong-Pong , Mangrove and Water-lily • Animals : Mango , Papaya , Strawberry , Mimosa and Love Grass • Splitting of fruits : Castor , Poppy , Balsam , African Tulip and Rubber Tree
