Mediated Society Friday the 13th
Real World Applications • Skype Dating: • Relationship between people -- the ways it is influenced -- by the presence of technology
Real World Applications • Political Surveillance • Orwell: 1984 - governments watching and controling us through their technologies • In the example of political tracking, this is done by “private” citizens who are spying on their politicians -- its reverse of the Orwllian process
Real World Applications • Killing News personnel at TV stations in Iraq • Altering the power dynamic by eliminating messengers of information
Society • We can think of society as having “sectors” • These sectors include: • Social • Political • Economic • Cultural • Moral
What is Media • It is plural of “medium” • Tamir: connects to allow communication • Ai: Structure that “broadcasted information” -- Media as an “Institution” • How is this different than communication?
Communication • By definition, must communication be two ways in order to be communication? • Unless a message is processed by another person/machine, it cannot be communication… (?)
North Korean Nuclear Test • How do we know that the test happened? • Spies are historically one way that collect information • We also use satellites • Machines that test ground movement’ earthquake testing devices -- media of communication
Is communication a one-step process? • Roxana: the machines give us answers (information) that human agents then use (analyze it, then interpret it and then you may act on it).
kinds of media • Mass media: meaning those media that reach large groups of people. • Often at one time: • Examples: TV, radio, newspapers • Is the Internet a mass medium? • Is library a mass medium? • Is it necessary to send the same “signal” out to the same group of people at the same time time to be “mass”?
The Processing of Messages • Economics and politics, time, space • Impossible to collect and receive all the messages that are available in the world at any one moment • Constraints on communication • Limitations on media
Mass Media and Industry • These mass media tend to be supported by giant industries -- called both "the cultural" and "content" industries. • Based on all sorts of decisions -- like will people see it? Pay money to see it? • Society’s history and culture will influence decisions made in an industry.
M.A.D • Mutually Assured Destruction • Computer in the absence of a human will act to save the country • Save it by destroying the other country
Types of Communication: • 1. Intra-personal communication • Inside of a person (institution) • 2. Inter-personal communication • When one person talks to another person • 3. Group • When we talk to a number of people (at one time), can’t be too large a number • How big is big before it becomes a mass?
Types of Communication: • 4. Organizational • This is is formal • Collective • 5. Mass • Large collectivity • Extrapersonal • Outside or beyond humans
Questions on the Reading • About the “three worlds” • What happens in the case of developing and developed society at the same time? • About the socialization process
