Overview • NDLO delegation: • Kapt. Rolf Ole Sivertsen, Sea King Fleet manager • Major Bjørnar Strøm, Project manager upgrade prgm • Mr Åge Førsund, Engineer/Air worthiness • Mr Øivind Borgenheim, Avionics engineer • 12 Sea King helicopters – Six bases, 1700 Km • 100% readiness on all 6 bases 24/7 -365 days • Average Flighthours: 13246 Hrs (6712-16187Hrs) • Acquired 1972 and 1996 • Owned by the Department of Justice, operated by the Air Force. • 4500 FH/yr – SAR and Aeromedical • End of service date: Currently at end of 2020 • To be replaced by AW-101 from 2017-2020
Risk and challenge towards 2020 • Will new helicopters be delivered and operational on time? • Maintained operational ambition thru 2020 • Low MTBF and structural issues • Obsoletion issues; CMM´s and IPC not updated by vendor… • Diminishing support from component OEM´s by various reasons • Former Air Force depot maintenance facility at Kjeller now transformed to Aerospace Industrial Maintenance (AIM) Norway. • Comercial entity owned by Department of Defence • Repairs most of RNoAF Sea King Components • Difficult transition • Many logistical issues • Less control over obsoletion issues
Increased maintenance burden and cost • Few or no usable components availible on critical systems • Extensive canibalization • Major risk for permanently reduced operational capacity, Results …
Current Technical issues • 7 hoist wires in 1,5 yearswith broken inner cords due to fatigue.
Risk reduction towards 2020 • IRAN II (Inspect and repair as nessesary) currentlyplanned to run untilfinished in 2017. (50-60.000 hrs/aircraft) • Replace obsolete FLIR 2000 EO/IR system • 6 upgraded 2013-2014 • Last 6 will be upgraded by march 2015 • Lifetime buyof Gnome parts • General increaseofstocklevels • A/W sustainmentstudy to identifythemagnitude ofexisting and upcomingchallenges (Support and Obsolescence)
Risk reduction towards 2020 • AW contracted to do Avionics upgrade program. Installation starts jan 2015. • AFCS (MK31 -> SN500) • Rad-Alt (APN-171 -> APN-198) • GPS (Tasman 6 -> Freeflight 2101 in front, Garming GTN-750 in the back) • Intercom (Due to audio quality and to few inputs) • National Emergency coms – TETRA (By Cobham) • More modifications in the future? • Compass ? • RNAV2 ? • Antenna drive unit? • Source new support solutions.
Summary • Maintained ambitions thru 2020 • Malfunctions will bring us down in periods • Vulnerability is increased when logistics is not in place • Update of critical/obsolete systems • Source new support solutions
