Background • Created on the APF Annual Network day of 13 December 2012 • Conducted four regular meetings • Members: Agriterra, SNV, HUNDEE, Agri-service ,F&S, FFARM, ESHET, Damota-Wolayta Union, THP,GOAL, DORCAS, Ethio-Consumer Society, Wolayta Development Association • Chair: Ethio-Consumer Society
Progress so far • Organized Cooperative Event – The role of coops in commercialization of Agriculture • In collaboration with Ardaita, FCA and ATA some 100 participants were mobilised • Presentations by FCA, ATA, SNV, Agriterra, Wolayta Union, OFCU, Technoserve • Contributed to ToR study C4C • Mobilised sesame expertise for CoCE training
Cooperative development strategy In the context of the Agricultural Cooperatives Sector Development Strategy: • Study by the C4C program (Agriterra/SNV) on recruitment and incentives systems of managers for coops/unions • The new role of Ardaita as CoCE: curricula and training manuals • Constructive dialogue with FAC on role divsions • Advanced certification scheme • Relationship union / prim coop
FSRE Fund winners with coops Hundee • Promotion of Dairy Value Chain for Enhancement of Income and Food Security for Smallholder farmers in Welmera Woreda • Outcomes/Objectives • Increased income of 1255 smallholder farmers by 40% • Enhance the functional capacity of 2 Dairy co-operatives • Create access for 1255 smallholders to remunerative and sustainable market through their dairy co-operatives • Increase the productivity of milk per cows by 50%
Continued Agri-Service • Goro/Bale cumin project • Aim: attain sustainable food security of targeted smallholders through the creation of an enabling market environment. • Average income of 448 smallholders (50% females) increased from 4750 birr/annum to 5937/annum • Improved quality and production of black cumin produced by PP farmers • Black cumin producers in project’s area linked to product markets and generate sustainable profit
The way forward: Plans in 2014 • Increase membership of the WG • Follow and share the study conducted by Agriterra on HR issues in Coops and unions • Further support and experience sharing of FSRE-fund winners • Organise event with Ardaita, FCA and ATA on: • Advanced Certification • Assessment of the performance of coops • Ardaita as Center of Excellence • Input-output marketing What are your ideas and suggestions?
