Hunger Games Chpts 1-3 Summary • Katniss wakes up at home. Meet the family! • Sleep in same room: Mom, Prim, Buttercup • She lives in District 12, primarily mining (used to be Appalachia. • Gale and the Woods – hunts & gathers • They sell their goods in the Hob and to the mayor • The Reaping System is explained • Prim’s name is called in the Reaping • Katniss takes her place (volunteer tribute). Peeta called. • Katniss relives her starvation years & Peeta’s rescue • 1 hr to say goodbye to her family, then on the train

Analysis • Symbolism: Names • Everdeen – (ever green) forever green • Katniss – flowering plant w/ roots ~potato • Peeta - Peter means rock, Pita = food • Mellark – meadowlark, bird of hope • Gale – a very strong wind • Hawthorne – Nathaniel: wrote about puritans and the puritanical society. • Primrose – Flower, Purity
Analysis: Symbolism • Reaping – • Cut or gather (a crop or harvest)- large numbers of men were employed to reap the harvest • Harvest the crop from (a piece of land) • Receive (a reward or benefit) as a consequence of one's own or other people's actions- the company is poised to reap the benefits of this investment
Activity • Groups of 4 – assigned by me • Draw an assignment • Groups will achieve their given task (you may trade with another group)
Cultural Poem Analysis • Take notes (each could be on quiz next week) • Evaluate – each peer evaluation/comment worth 5 pts • Turn in your Cultural Poems handout when you present to get a grade
