What is the VSBPE? 13-member, teacher majority, policy-making board appointed by the Governor
What does the VSBPE do? • The Board’s purpose is to oversee the training, licensing and professional standards of teachers and administrators. Specifically, the Board has been empowered by the Legislature of the State of Vermont to: • Establish standards, to promote quality and effectiveness across the educator career continuum • Approve educator preparation programs and alternate routes that meet the standards • Oversee and monitor the application and licensing process • Develop a code of professional ethics and act as advisors regarding its interpretation • Adopt regulations and policies (Act 214)
The VSBPE last adopted teaching standards in 1992. They were based on INTASC standards for NEW teachers.
How can the Core standards support educators today? They provide a new vision for effective practice to empower student learning.
New Emphasis of the Standards • Personalized Learning for Diverse Learners • A Stronger Focus on Application of Knowledge and Skills • Improved Assessment Literacy • A Collaborative Professional Culture • New Leadership Roles for Teachers and Administrators
