Matthew 16:18 “And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.”
1 Corinthians 12:12 “The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ.”
1 Corinthians 12:27-28 “Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. And in the church God has appointed first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, also those having gifts of healing, those able to help others, those with gifts of administration, and those speaking in different kinds of tongues.”
The Purpose: To establish a worshiping church among every people and in every place
Acts 11:21 “The Lord's hand was with them, and a great number of people believed and turned to the Lord.”
Acts 11:25-26 “Then Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul, and when he found him, he brought him to Antioch. So for a whole year Barnabas and Saul met with the church and taught great numbers of people.”
Acts 11:26 “The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch.”
2 Timothy 2:1-2 “You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others.”
Training for Missions Today • Teaching the gospel of Jesus Christ to Christians and having them express the gospel to others. • Training young Christians to serve and giving opportunity to serve. • Training young Christians to disciple others and giving them opportunity to engage in discipleship.

Acts 13:1 “In the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen (who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch) and Saul.”
Acts 13:2 “While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.’ ”
Acts 13:3 “So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off.”
Acts 13:4 “The two of them, sent on their way by the Holy Spirit, went down to Seleucia and sailed from there to Cyprus.”
Acts 14:26-28 “From Attalia they sailed back to Antioch, where they had been committed to the grace of God for the work they had now completed. On arriving there, they gathered the church together and reported all that God had done through them and how he had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles. And they stayed there a long time with the disciples.”
Paul and Barnabas • Returned to their home church in Antioch • Reported and encouraged • Involved themselves in the work of the church • Were received by the church until they were sent again
Pattern for the Church • Those who are effectively serving in a church may be candidates for missionary service. • God must have called missionaries into service; without His calling and power, the effort will fail.
Pattern for the Church • The local church is responsible to help discern the calling and to do the sending. • Missionaries remain connected to a local church and pastor. Experience shows that those who are not connected struggle and sometimes fail.
Steps Toward Missionary Service • Offer yourself as a living sacrifice • Get involved with evangelism and teaching now • Join others in praying for missions • Actively support current missionaries • Grow in your Bible knowledge • Get your life and finances in order
Steps Toward Missionary Service • Pray in unity with church elders • With elders, define God’s specific call • Be commissioned by the church • Go forth as a member of the church to serve as a missionary • Return and report to the church
What if I am not Called to Go • Step up and replace those who go • Live sacrificially so that you may support those who go
