  2. A Month of Preparation • During the month of Elul, we prepare for the very important events coming up in the month of Tishrei • Rosh Hashanah • Yom Kippur • Sukkot • Shemini Atzeret / Simchat Torah

Ways We Prepare During The Month of Elul • Sephardim already begin to recite selichot from the beginning of the month • Ashkenazim usually wait until the Saturday night before Rosh Hashanah • Sometimes, Ashkenazim begin a week earlier • We recite a chapter from Tehillim (Psalms) after Shacharit and Ma’ariv • L’Dovid Hashem Ori

  5. The Sounds of the Shofar • We blow the shofar after Shacharit At your tables, discuss reasons for blowing the shofar during the month of Elul

  6. Letter Writing • It’s customary to include mention the upcoming New Year with some type of greeting whenever you write a letter to someone. • “Kesiva ve-chasima tova” – “You should be inscribed for good things”
