ICSD Equity Planning (2009) “In addition to the absence of coordination and sufficiency, the programs of the past all have another common failure – they are indirect. Each seeks to solve [fill-in-the-blank] by first solving something else” (M.L. King, 1967, p. 162). 1 Equity Goal 5 Equity Measures 6 Equity Priorities 16 Equity Elements 40+ years of Equity History* *While equity work in Ithaca has a long history, we can at least look to 1965 when the Superintendent of Ithaca Schools, James Mason, unveiled a “community involvement plan” to eliminate educational gaps (Ithaca Journal, 26 January 1965). The most recent equity efforts begin in earnest with the creation / implementation of the 2005 strategic equity plan and have been augmented by community and district partnerships, action research groups, book groups, workshops, orientations, presentations, trainings, etc.
2008-2011 Equity Priorities 2008-2011 Equity Measures Recruit & Retain Academic Support Curriculum Professional Development Family Involvement Supplemental Programs Staff/Student Diversity 3-8 Math Scores 3-8 ELA Scores Graduation Rate Attendance (K-12) The six equity priorities were prioritized from 16 Equity Elements in the ICSD Strategic Equity Plan (2005). While each of the priorities and measures are inter-related, currently only one of the priorities has a direct link to an equity measure.

The equity report card will continue to provide us with benchmarks and some measures of progress/assessment. The real work will be to 1). utilize the 16 equity elements in devising detailed plans to achieve our goals; and 2). implement these plans with accountability.
