  1. CCOT China 1750-Present Ms. Buffalino

  2. INTRO • If the intro cue doesn’t work don’t force it. • A suggestion to help you save time. • Give China’s geographic location as opening sentence. • Thesis = global context • CANNOT USE SOCIAL, POLITICAL AND ECONOMIC

  3. Basic Facts were missing = study time was not given • Chronological order AND DATES! • Geography • Qing (1644-1911): why did foreigners dominate and why did they fall?!!!! • Spheres of Influence and their impact: First Opium War (1839-1842), Taiping Rebellion (1850-1864), First Sino-Japanese War (1894-1895), Boxer Rebellion (1899-1901)

  4. Basic Facts con’t • Confucianism is a belief system • Stick to the periodization -> Buddhism was not a major concern for the modern era. • 1750 = Age of Revolutions • 1900 = World Wars • 1945 and beyond = Cold War • WAS ISOLATED SINCE 1433 – WHY????

  5. Basic Facts con’t • People’s Republic of China = 1949 • Define: communism and a command economy. • Nationalism was not democratic but it was not communistic. • Nationalism Party (Kuomintang) -> nationalistic to rid foreigners, did not give natural rights. • Sun Yatsen – 1911 • Jiang Jieshi (Chiang Kai-shek) – 1928 • Why was the Long March successful? • Infanticide – been around in China for 2000 years (WEEKLIES) • Tiananmen Square(1989) – Global context and it was Deng!!!

  6. Change/Continuity • Changes: political ideology, economic systems • Continuity: human rights violations (being patriarchal is a human rights violation) • 2 BODIES IS FINE -> if you do three to split up length just make sure you have a reason! • Reasons: • Political ideology -> foreign conquest forced the Chinese to abandon traditional dynasties; communism promised to be a solution to modernize quickly. • Economic systems -> Deng Xiaoping needed to improve the economy by allowing foreign investment. In 1976 when Deng took control Mao’s Great Leap Forward and Cultural Revolution destroyed China economically. • Human rights violations -> Confucianism (5 Relationships), culture instilled patriarchal values and geography solidified it; China has never had a governmental system that has fostered natural rights or democratic ideals.
