Chapter 4 Blending the Real and the Virtual • New technologies have created new forms of communications * Examples: Social networks, Skype, Messenger, Text Messages, Face Time, OnStar, GPS, etc.
Binding the Real and the Virtual • Terms • Augmented - to make larger; enlarge in size, number, strength, or extent; increase: His salary is augmented by a small inheritance. • Reality System(Azuma)- one that combines real and virtual, is interactive in real time is registered in 3D • Mediated Reality-refers to the ability to add to, subtract information from, or otherwise manipulate one's perception of reality through the use of a wearable computer or hand-held device such as a smart phone.
Chapter 4 • George Stratton – created special glasses, to show that one sees a world that closely related to ones body. • Wanted to be able to illustrate that the togetherness that occurs in a more physical level, beyond just two flat objects coming together to form a physical object. • He came to the conclusion that once one enters the virtual world, a sensation occurs that’s meaningful, correlative, liable and habitual.
Blending the Real and the Virtual • Merleau-Ponty- To his observations, the body is a place that expresses movement and a medium for perception of the world. • When the body has an experience, perception and meaning are put into play by thought • This idea gave insight to others as to what kind of response entering the virtual world did and caused to people
Chapter 4 • The process of embodiment is essential for communicating in virtual environments and being able to interact. • The ability to touch, hear, and see are probably the most important senses to lead to full submission into a virtual world.
Blending the Real and the Virtual • An Australian Artist Stelarc, states that when in a virtual world one stops assuming their personal entity and takes on a new one once inside the virtual reality • This new entity is a fragment of the person they wish to be or wish to be more alike • Example: That YouTube video we saw in class with the couple that fell in love
Chapter 4 • Experiments where conducted to show what are the results and or the events that take place in the brain when being in a virtual world • Results: • The brain believes whatever is seen over anything else. • The brain will feel fake limbs as if they are part of the actual body
Blending the Real and the Virtual • Media was discussed as another form of virtual reality in the form that when presented with a news cast you are being sucked into a “world” of information and are putting your surroundings on hold to pay attention to the news. Also in the form that T.V shows serve as a world where we get caught up in them, taking us into a different world per say.
