  1. Literary Terms Goal: Write examples of metaphor, simile, personification, and alliteration

  2. There Will Come Soft Rains There will come soft rains and the smell of the ground,And swallows circling with their shimmering sound; And frogs in the pools singing at night,And wild plum trees in trembling white;Robins will wear their feathery fire,Whistling their whims on a low fence-wire;And not one will know of the war, not oneWill care at last when it is done. Not one would mind, neither bird nor tree,If mankind perished utterly; And Spring herself, when she woke at dawnWould scarcely know that we were gone. Sara Teasdale

  3. Simile • Compares two things with “like” or “as” • My brother acts like a monkey • My sister is as quiet as a mouse. • He looks as happy as a kid in a candy store. • She eats like a pig. • Non-examples: • My brother likes ice cream. • My sister looks like my mom.

There was no one there. - Proverb • Earthfelt the wound; and Nature from her seat, Sighing, through all her works, gave signs of mourning. - John Milton • Snow speaks to the people, its falling above in the gloomy sunlight. Its white sparkling voice echoes as it falls through the air - Jake • The operation is over. On the table, the knife lies exhausted, on its side, the bloody meal smear-dried upon its legs. The knife rests. - Richard Selzer, "The Knife"

  11. With which personification do you agree? Why? • An old house appears depressed. • An old house invites her guests to sit in simple comfort. • An old house hides all a family’s secrets behind her silent lips. • An old house smiles with memories of the past.
