“Mac Basics for Music Production 101” Martín Perna EDTC 6358 Theory and Practice of E-Learning University of Texas-Brownsville Spring 2010
Contents of this Presentation • Ultimate goal of the planned online course • Course accomplishments • How initial plan differs from final product • Rationale for online course design • Sample lessons/modules/units as an example. • Lessons learned from project • Questions / Comments / Contact info
Ultimate Goal • Create a useful new teaching tool for Dubspot • Meets current and future needs • Student re-training in Mac OSX environment • Adaptable to Moodle CMS • Engages learners in 3-way dialogue • Learner-to-learner • Learner-to-instructor • Learner-to-content
Course accomplishments • Creation of four pre-training lessons • Lessons 1-3: Mac OSX Basics • Lesson 4: Quickstart lesson for Windows users • Each lesson contains: • 1-2 enhanced video screenshot tutorials • 1 Blackboard based quiz • 1 reading or video assignment & response question • 1 discussion board question
Initial plan & final product: Differences • Major differences • Software tools used • Format of quizzes • Limited interactivity of video tutorials
Initial plan & final product: Differences • Initial plan: use Camtasia Studio (Windows) • Record screen capture • Record narration • Edit • Create assessments, surveys • Table of contents • Clickable interactive hotspots within tutorials
Initial plan & final product: Differences • Final project: tools used • Screenflow for Mac : Screen capture and editing • Can’t create quizzes • Can’t create hotspots or Flash interactivity • Logic 8.0: recording and importing narration • Blackboard: Built-in quizzes • Table of contents: Presented as within tutorial • Not fixed/interactive like within Camtasia • No clickable hotspots within tutorial • Quizzes: built-in to Blackboard • Used Blackboard’s image hotspot function for matching/ID questions
Rationale for Course Design • Simulation in authentic learning context: • Multimedia video tutorials • Hotspot images within quizzes • Discussion boards: multiple layers of interaction in authentic learning context • Learner-to-learner • Learner-to-instructor • Learner-to-content
Example: Lesson 3: Quiz • Sample multiple choice question: • “You can launch or run applications in the following ways" • From a Finder window • From Spotlight. • From the Dock, if the application is part of a dock. • From the "Recent Items" option in the Apple Menu, if the application was used recently.
Lessons learned • Start early • Be Persistent • Have multiple SW tools available to do job • Spend time learning CMS
Lessons learned • Start early • Many false starts • First two clients dropped out • Leave time for technical problems • Couldn’t access 6358 Elluminate sessions • Software needed to create tutorials crashed
Lessons learned • Be Persistent • Almost ready to give up and drop the course • Found Dubspot after two failed attempts • Now have paid employment with Dubspot!
Lessons learned • Have multiple SW tools available to do job • Early March: Lost Windows capability on my Mac • No time to reformat machine • Time spent researching, learning more limited Mac SW
Lessons learned • Spend time learning CMS • Locate existing resources • Initially overlooked quiz features of Blackboard • Confusion with HTML and formatting of text
