The Good News of Salvation is Christ Jesus is a Promise from God Romans 1:1-2
Romans 1:1-2 • Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God, (Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures,)
Why are we back in Romans 1? I completely missed an essential truth in the first 9 chapters of Romans that we must understand.
Romans 1:1-2 Parenthetical Thought • the gospel of God, (Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures,)
Two Parts: Two Weeks • Today we are going to look back from Romans 1:1-2 • Genesis thru Acts • Next week we are going to look forward from Romans 1:1-2 • Romans thru Revelation
The Gospel God’s promise of salvation to those who are dead and dying.
The Gospel—A Promise from God Anchored to the cross of Christ, in eternity past, there is a promise (rope) of salvation from God that men and women have been believing (trusting) in from the beginning of time.
A Promise Is… • A verbal commitment by one person to another agreeing to do (or not to do) something in the future • Grounds for feeling hopeful about the future • A prediction about, tell in advance • Give grounds for expectations
Gospel Promises God says: “I will” • Gospel Promises revolve around: • Living (eternal Life) • Deliverance • Victory • Redemption • Mercy (grace) • Forgiveness • Salvation
Application Question: What determines whether you are willing to take a verbal promise from someone (or alternatively you draw up a contract)?
Game Plan Today • Part I • Pentateuch • Part II • Prophets • Part III • Psalms (other writings) • Part IV • Gospel & Acts
Question Where would we expect to find God’s first salvific promise in the Bible?
God’s First Salvific Promise was addressed to Satan Turn to Genesis 3:14-15
Satan the Serpent Revelation 12:9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. Genesis 3:14 • And the LORD God said unto the serpent,
Physical Curse Snakes are a result of sin. Genesis 3:14 • And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:
The First Salvific Promise Genesis 3:15 • And I will put enmity between thee [Satan] and the woman [Eve], • and between thy seed • [Satan and his demons] • and her seed • [future human beings];
The First Salvific Promise Genesis 3:15 • and between thy seed and her seed; • it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.( KJV) • he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel (ESV).
Genesis 4:25 Christ cannot be a descent of Cain—thus God gives Eve another son—Seth. • And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: • For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.
Genesis 4:26 Seth has a son and a revival breaks out. • And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: • then began men to call upon the name of the LORD.
Luke 3:23 & 38 And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli,… ...Which was the son of Enos, which was the son of Seth, which was the son of Adam, which was the son of God.
The Point Is Jesus is the seed of Eve who was bruised by Satan but Satan is promised a head injury (defeat).
Next Salvific Promise God promises to destroy the world, but to Noah God promises life if he will trust in His word.

Numbers 21:8-9 • And the LORD said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live. Listen to Job and King David’s Testimony Application
