They give our narratives shape… • Using Word: • From our younger students… • Preps/Grade Ones – writing their spelling words in sentences – exploring different font/size and colour • To our older students… • Writing straight into Word rather than handwriting a draft first – much easier to edit, less tedious! • Other word helpers • Right mouse click on the word and select synonyms (usually only works for the root word)…this will also give you antonyms • Open a browser window and go to an online thesaurus or dictionary • www.answers.com • http://thesaurus.reference.com/ • For those obscure and rare words - http://phrontistery.info/index.html - a great site for exploring the wonder and joy of words!

To write good narratives you have to read good narratives: • Use Google booksand Amazon.com to find some examples of good narratives. • If you register for either Google or Amazon you are able to search for books and search inside those books. You can search for a line of text or references to a particular character. • This is not to replace the reading of books but to support the books you read in your class. • You have read Anne of Green Gables and you want to find a particular paragraph or part of the story quickly and easily. • There is limited access to a particular book in the classroom

  19. What is/is not blogging? – one person’s perspective… 1) Posting assignments (Not blogging) 2) Journaling, i.e., "This is what I did today." (Not blogging) 3) Posting links. (Not blogging) 4) Links with descriptive annotation, i.e., "This site is about ...." (Not really blogging either, but getting close depending on the depth of description) 5) Links with analysis that gets into the meaning of the content being linked (A simple form of blogging) 6) Reflective, metacognitive writing or practice without links. (Complex writing, but simple blogging, I think. Commenting would probably fall in here somewhere) 7) Links with analysis and synthesis that articulate a deeper understanding or relationship to the content being linked and written with potential audience response in mind. (Real blogging) 8) Extended analysis and synthesis over a longer period of time that builds on previous posts, links and comments. (Complex blogging). (Richardson, 2005, p. 32)
