IBM - CVUT Student Research Projects Second Life RTTS translation object Daniel Tekel (tekeld1@fel.cvut.cz)
Second Life • Not classic MMOG • Virtual world accessible via internet • Residents can explore, meet other residents, socialize, participate in individual and group activities, create and trade virtual property and services, … IBM - CVUT Student Research Projects 2
Project goals • to explore the possibilities of connecting RTTS service and Second Life • to create a translation object which would enable avatars to chat also with foreign language speaking avatars • to explore Second Life possibilities of communicating through HTTP interface IBM - CVUT Student Research Projects 3
Project results • Second Life can communicate via HTTP, but it is communication possibilities are quiet limited – truncated responds, no authentication, … • it’s possible to communicate with RTTS • 2 translation objects were created: • Translator Kiosk • Personal Translator IBM - CVUT Student Research Projects 4
Translator Kiosk • kiosk offer avatars two communication modes: • it can send translated messages to all registered people • it can send translated messages just to one specific avatar • at the beginning every avatar has to set his language • after that: • when someone speaks to public channel, every registered avatar receives translated message to his own language • if someone speaks into someones channel, it sends translation just to that person • to find out which channel is assigned to which avatar, you touch the object and select person by name IBM - CVUT Student Research Projects 5
Personal Translator • translates messages on public channel • at the beginning the user has to set: • his language (from this language will translator translate his messages; other peoples messages will be translated to this language) • outer-world language • then translator “listens” the public channel • translates to outer-world language everything the avatar says • translates to avatars language messages from other people IBM - CVUT Student Research Projects 6
