America was changing and expanding. It needed more people to keep the nation growing.Immigrants became workers and helped to build our nation.
1892 • Chinese exclusion act is passed, which also bars ‘lunatics’ and ‘idiots’ • From 1820-1892, 15,641,688 immigrants are estimated to have come to America
Ellis Island • Ellis Island opened its doors on January 1st, 1892 • Before this Immigration had been overlooked by the State • The Government decided that a more detailed system was needed • 75% of the immigrants who came to America from 1892-1924 came through Ellis Island

Annie Moore • First person to enter through Ellis Island • 15 years old • Traveled with her two younger brothers • From County Cork, Ireland • She was given a $10 gold coin
The Land of Golden Opportunity • America was thought of as the land of opportunity and a place of freedom
The Crossing • The average steerage ticket cost $30 (that was equal to …) • Most journeys were two weeks long • Conditions on board were usually anything but comfortable, most traveled in steerage: think cramped & crowded
Immigrants who arrived on the Baltic
Once you reached America you would travel by ferry from your ship to the Island to be processed.
If you were reasonably healthy and your papers were in order the average processing time was 3 to 5 hours
Medical Exams • Before being let into America the Immigrants were given tests- Physical and Mental • This was a very scary part because if they failed the test they would have to return to where their boat had left from
Medical Exams Checked & Noted • Suspected Mental Defect • Definite signs of Mental Disease Observed • Back • Conjunctivitis • Eyes • Face • Feet • Goiter • Heart • Hernia • Physical and Lungs • Pregnancy • Neck • Scalp • Senility

You were kept back, and possibly sent back, if you had a contagious disease or it was thought that you would need to be taken care of by the government
March 1917 Once you passed your exams and all of your papers were in order you were reunited with your family, found your belongings, and headed off to start the next part of your journey… starting a new life in America!

The Statue of Liberty • This photo was taken in 1918
LIBERTY OVER PARIS As months passed the looming figure of Liberty began to rise over the streets of Paris. When the statue was completed the scaffolding was removed for a dedication on July, 4, 1884. Then the scaffolding was set up again and the statue dismantled.
