Psychologist Abraham Maslow developed a theory of motivation. He said that we are all motivated by needs.
Everything we want… Everything we do… All the decisions we make… …come from basic human needs that have evolved through time.
Maslow realized that some needs are more important than others, so he arranged them into a pyramid…
Achieving one’s full potential, including creative activities Self Actualization Esteem Needs: Feeling of accomplishment Belonging & Love: Intimate relationships, friendship Safety Needs: Security, safety Physiological Needs: Food, water, warmth, rest
According to Maslow’s theory, you must meet your most basic needs first before you are concerned with needs at a higher level For example, a person who is starving is not motivated to seek safety
Media tries to sell items based on the needs outlined by Maslow. In the chart below list types of products or ads that are targeting a particular need.
Needs will be different from person to person depending on where they are in the pyramid and the ability they have to meet certain needs… For example…
Use a Venn Diagram to compare the needs of a baby with the needs of a teenager TEENAGER BABY •spending money •food in cupboards / fridge •part time job •friends •someone to make food •babysitter •clean diapers •protection •family / relationships •shelter •water •safety
1.What is the product or service being advertised? 2.What is the ad’s slogan? 3.What is the ad’s target audience? (ex. Men, women, children, elderly, single….) 4. To which of Maslow’s needs does this ad appeal?
