Percussion Instruments Percussion instruments are instruments that make a unique noise when you hit them with your hand or a stick. There are two types of percussion instruments : Idiophones and Membranophones. Membranophones are instruments that have a stretched membrane or a drum head covering a hollow shell. Membranophone instruments: Bass Drum, Timpani, Bongos, Drum Kit, Snare Drum and Tambourine. Idiophones are instruments without a membrane that create a sound when they vibrate. Brass Instruments To play a brass instrument you have to purse your lips which makes a buzzing noise. It causes the tube and air inside the instrument to vibrate. To make a high pitched noise, you have to purse your lips tightly and to make a low pitched noise you purse your lips loose. Woodwind Instruments Woodwind instruments are usually tubes that have holes in it. The shorter the tube, the higher the pitch, the longer the tube, the lower the pitch. Covering the holes in a woodwind instrument will make the pitch lower. Clarinet Flute Oboe Saxophone
