The IPv6 Project • A Presentation by: • Paul Muchene (Network Lead ) • 9th July 2012
How it Started • Pilot project run in partnership with Safaricom • Liaised with the Safaricom Network team • Tests over a 10 day period: 21st May – 31st May
Configuration • Address Block: 2001:43D0:1:9::/64 • Gateway: 2001:43D0:0001:0009::1/64 • DNS: 2001:43D0:0001:0004:41:203:208:18 | 19
Configuration • Stateless Address Auto Configuration (SLAAC): Distribute Addresses to end user devices • DHCP6 to advertise DNS information
Challenges • DHCP6 is not supported on some devices e.g. Some versions of Android, Mac OSX (Pre Lion) • Some clients could not receive SLAAC information • Nevertheless IPv6 worked Seamlessly for most!
Way Forward • Work with the East Africa Network Operators Group (EANOG) is creating IPv6 training material and resources • Encourage content makers to give IPv6 a try • Conduct more tests especially in area of V6 Security
