Accident statistics • Looking at our Health and Safety statistics up to the end of May 2014 the following trends are evident: • Manual handling represents 28% of our minor injury circumstances year to date • The 2 RIDDOR injuries reported so far this year are related to manual handling manhole covers:- • Lancaster UID – pulled shoulder whilst lifting cover • Chamberlayne Road – fracture to toe after dropping manhole cover and frame on foot Safety | Communication | Quality | Integrity | TeamSpirit| Caring | Trust | Pride

3. Introduction The term manual handling covers a wide variety of activities including lifting, lowering, pushing, pulling and carrying. 4. Manual Handling assessment Wherever it is practicable, mechanical lifting aids should be used to transport goods to their destination. 11. OTHER FACTORS • Other factors: • Is movement or posture hindered by clothing or personal protective equipment? • Is there an absence of the correct/suitable PPE being worn? • Always look out for the “Line of Fire” – are you in a position of danger?
