Accident statistics • Looking at our Health and Safety statistics up to the end of May 2014 the following trends are evident: • Manual handling represents 28% of our minor injury circumstances year to date • The 2 RIDDOR injuries reported so far this year are related to manual handling manhole covers:- • Lancaster UID – pulled shoulder whilst lifting cover • Chamberlayne Road – fracture to toe after dropping manhole cover and frame on foot Safety | Communication | Quality | Integrity | TeamSpirit| Caring | Trust | Pride

Manual Handling assessment Wherever it is practicable, mechanical lifting aids should be used to transport goods to their destination. TASK • Does the manual handling task involve any of the following: • Twisting • Stooping • Bending • Pushing • Pulling • Positioning the load • Sudden movement • Not enough rest or recovery periods • Team handling • Seated work Safety | Communication | Quality | Integrity | TeamSpirit| Caring | Trust | Pride
INDIVIDUAL • Is the person: • Likely to be in the “Line of Fire” when lifting • Pregnant • Disabled • Suffering from health problems Safety | Communication | Quality | Integrity | TeamSpirit| Caring | Trust | Pride

OTHER FACTORS • Other factors: • Is movement or posture hindered by clothing or personal protective equipment? • Is there an absence of the correct/suitable PPE being worn? • Always look out for the “Line of Fire” – are you in a position of danger?
