About IDSP IDSP was created in 1998 with its founding campus in Quetta, Balochistan The main objective is to develop processes of engaging the excluded young people from the main stream education and development, Six percent of Pakistani population falls between 15 and 35 years of age, majority of these are not formally educated or in the mainstream of livihood. IDSP takes any young man or a woman who can read and write, has an idea for his community development, and is able to articulate the idea to the selection forum To date IDSP 4000 young people have graduated from IDSP courses of study and practices.
Demistifying Research Two graduates of IDSP became IDSP’s fellows and wanted to work on water issues of their communities Mr.Shrief Shambuzai launched research on the impact of Miranidam on the communities of Nasarabad in Turbat Balochistan (Baloch people) Mr. Abdul Hai undertook action research and organized his community in rehabilitating 112 year old Karaze to bring water to irrigate the fields of his village in Pishin , (Pushtoo people)
Comparison Difference in the knowledge bases and the outcome impacting people Dam Vs Karaze
Nassarabad A community of several villages living for more then 200 years, grew dates of excellent quality, had sustainable lively hood.
Mirani Dam A project of government of Pakistan, to store water from natural water sources that runs across the date farms of the communities.
The Dam and the Water Three years ago in heavy rains, the back flow of the dam water over flowed.
Karez System Based on community knowledge Local people of Kamalzai cleaning up the wells of 112 years old Karaze its a people’s technology based on traditional knowledge.
The Impact Mirani Dam destroyed the lives and livelyhood of 40,000 families, 3000 acres of good quality land with date farms. Shrief Shambozai has completed his research, IDSP published it and now he is using his research for policy on displaced people on Mirani Dam. Kamalzai Karaze, joined the communities of five villages who had enmity, 10,000 families returned back to take on the work back on their lands for Apples, grapes, apricots and grains, Irrigating 1000 acres of land. Abdul Hai has reorganized the communities of Kamalzai youth in community development, thus diverting the unemployed youth from destructive activities into community development. His work is covered by a film. Both above work is being used by as teaching and practice in IDSP courses.
