Quality of Internet Services AFNOR proposal (1) • Purpose • The final objective is to give the non-professionnal users a tool to choose an ISP for internet access, based on a common quality level classification.
Quality of Internet Services AFNOR proposal (2) • Means • Establish a classification for the quality of the service offered by the internet access suppliers through levels of performance for a set of criteria. • Compliance to the classification is claimed by the ISP (self-declaration) • Restriction of the classification to the more common basic services (e-mail, http, ftp) - Excluding IP voice, video, teleconferencing, chat, ...
Quality of Internet Services AFNOR proposal (3) • Categories of criteria • Criteria for the connection • Criteria for the flow • Criteria for the access • Criteria for the applications
Criteria for the connection (1) • Connectability Availability upon user request for connection : 95%
Criteria for the connection (2) • Connection keeping After connection being established, capability of maintaining the connection : 95 %
Criteria for the connection (3) • Disconnection management The supplier must provide the user with information when a disconnection occurs. This information shall contain : type of disconnection, foreseeable reasons, way and delay for re-establishment of the service
Criteria for the flow (1) • Providing delay Probability for a IP frame to be transmitted in a time inferior to a given value : 95 % Given values are : France = 15 ms Germany or UK = 30 ms USA = 150 ms
Criteria for the flow (2) • Drop Probability for a IP frame to be lost in output : 1 %
Criteria for the flow (3) • Discard Probability for a IP frame to be lost in input : 0,001 %
Criteria for the access (1) • Geographic covering The supplier shall provide the user with access to local connection as well as to national connection
Criteria for the access (2) • Pricing guarantee The supplier shall guarantee its proposed prices both for local and nationale connections
Criteria for the access (3) • Alternative accesses The supplier shall provide the user with alternate phone numbers in case of unavailability of the usual number
Criteria for the applications (1) • E-mail - Size of accepted messages The size of accepted messages shall be minimum : 2 Mo
Criteria for the applications (2) • E-mail - Transmission guarantee The supplier shall ensure that a user who connects within the 15 days after a message has been sent to him will have 100% chances to have access to the message
Criteria for the applications (3) • Web and news - Use of proxis Minimum requirement for efficiency of the proxis : 25 % This defines the probability for a web page or a message to be delivered to the user from the proxis rather than from the internet.
Criteria for the applications (4) • Applications offered by the supplier Minimum requirement for efficiency of the supplier applications : 20 % This criterium defines the probability for an information to be delivered to the user from the supplier offered applications rather than those available on internet.
