How do they achieve this? • Identify, Report, and follow up issues • Reassuring presence. • Encourage friends and family • Taking pride in their community • Take an active ‘hands-on’ role • Feeds into the Local Action Team
Recruiting & Sustaining • Identifing and linking with partners • Presentations to school • 65 volunteers • Apply to join, and chosen with aid of teachers – Mixed ability group. • Keen waiting list and zero tolerance policy
Benefits – The Community • Less bored young people in the community • Dispel perceptions of young people as a nuisance • Prevents ‘Broken Windows’ attitudes • Shows local youths in a positive light • Allows young people to make a positive visable impact on the community • Greater integration, confidence and involvement • Improved community facilities • Cleaner, safer, greener neighbourhood.
Benefits – The Junior Wardens • Contributes towards National Curriculum subjects – • Citizenship, PHSE, Geography etc. • Structure for 8-12 year olds to make contribution to community. • Provides an outlet in areas of limited facilities • Encourages healthy activity • Team building and social skills • Respect of the community • Increased self esteem
Future Outcomes • Young people as mentors and role models for peers and younger groups • Adults and families to be encouraged to invest in their community • Young people understand the impact of their actions on the environment • Young people understand the importance of volunteering and the concept of community as they grow.
