Boot Camp 101(Pack Up & Ship Out Your Civies- Put On Your Uniform!) 080314 Love Doesn’t Brag, Isn’t Fat-Headed, Isn’t Rude, Doesn’t Seek Its Own Way, & Doesn’t Get Mad Easily
I Corinthians 13:1-8 “Does not parade itself” – present middle indicative of perpereuomai – vain-glorious; braggart; to boast of oneself. This is the outward display. It doesn’t try to impress others; it is not a braggart. Who do we build up in our conversations with others? (I, I, I!!!) In 12:21-26 they each felt that their gifts were superior. This one can also keep you from doing things, such as teaching, etc. “What if I mess up?” “I’m not good enough.” What will they think of me?” This was the Moses problem! (Cf. Ex. 3 & 4).
Exodus 3 & 4 The 3 Excuses of Moses – False humility (3:11) The people won’t believe me! (4:1) I can’t speak well (4:10) – I stutter a lot (especially when I am nervous!)
I Corinthians 13:1-8 In fact, bragging about yourself is usually the result of your actually feeling inadequate – perhaps from emotional bondage from your childhood. “Is not puffed up” – present middle indicative of phusioō – to inflate; puff up. To be inflated with pride; proud; vain; arrogant. Inward disposition. It is the Greek word for a puffed up frog! Cf. I Cor. 8:1. The Doctrine of the Arrogant & the Inadequate. They felt that they belonged to the best group (1:10-4:21).
I Corinthians 13:1-8 “Love…does not behave rudely” (vs. 5) – present active indicative of aschemoneō – to behave in an unbecoming manner; to behave dishonorably or indecently; doesn’t embarrass or belittle others (this is what we do to make ourselves look better). Love…does not seek its own” (vs. 5) – present active indicative of zēteō – to search after; to pursue; to endeavour to obtain; to seek in order to find by thinking, meditating, reasoning; aim at; strive after. This is a selfish person that wants their own way, or else! They are operating under the lusts of the Old Sin Nature (OSN) (cf. James 3:14, 16).
I Corinthians 13:1-8 “Love…is not provoked” (vs. 5) – present passive indicative of paroxunō – sharp fit of anger; burn with anger; be exasperated; throw a tantrum. It is not easily irritated. “Love…thinks no evil” (vs. 5) – “thinks” - present middle indicative of logidzomai – to count; calculate; enumerate; to set down as a matter of account; to think upon; ponder. “Evil” – kakos – wicked; corrupt; bad; destructive; distressing; wrong thinking; worthless thinking. Anything that is not a part of Divine Good. This is the thinking of Satan. It doesn’t plot evil or mind other people’s business. (Cf. Proverbs 6:16-19.) For right thinking, see Romans 12:9, 17-19.
