  1. Involvement of Older People in the mappmal projectPaula Moynihan Multidisciplinary approach to a prototype for the prevention of malnutrition in older people in hospitals

  2. Objectives of mappmal The mappmal ‘Food Family’ includes representation from the NDA OPRG, National Pensioners Convention and Years Ahead To define and map out the current system for food provision for older people in hospital and identify opportunities for intervention With input from key users ‘The Food Family’, to devise a new food provision system To ‘test’ the new system by asking The Food Family about their perceptions of its feasibility and acceptability

  3. How have we involved older people in the mappmal project? Workshop 1 - July 2009 Workshop at Newcastle University • Presented our mappings of the current food provision service for feedback from The Food Family (including OPRG) • Conducted ‘brain storming’ activities to generate ideas for our new food provision system • We then used these ‘ideas’ to define the mappmal prototype ‘Service Principles’

  4. Service Principles • Nutrition as a treatment • All older people to be considered at risk of malnutrition • Nutritionally superior foods for older people • Personalisation of food service to older peoples needs and preferences • Stimulate patient appetite and maximise patient comfort and enjoyment of eating • Facilitate better communication between catering, patient and food family • Food on demand, little and often access to food

  5. How older people have influenced the progress of mappmal Workshop 2 – February 2010 University of Reading • Obtained feedback from The Food Family (including OP) on the mappmal ‘Service Principles’ • Used role play (involving OP) to explore opportunities for development • At our 3rd workshop -January 2011 we obtain feedback from older people (OPRG and Years Ahead) on our mock-up prototype

  6. What the mappmal team gained from the involvement of older people • Relevant insights into food provision for older people in hospital from those it is intended for! • That our project is relevant and important • Encouragement!
