  2. Marine Biomes • Aquatic Environment -Salt Water environment. -Lakes, Seas, Oceans, estuaries and coral reefs. • Varies in depth, temperature, chemical composition, exposure to sunlight speed and direction of the current.

  3. Estuaries • Opening of the mouth of a river that empties into the sea. • Salt and fresh water mixes forming large deposits of sediments that accumulate on the riverbed. • Wildlife includes: • Fresh water organisms. • Species normally found in estuaries such as oysters and sponges.

  4. FUN FACT! • The Saint Lawrence is the only Estuary in Quebec that stretches from Trois-Rivieres to Pointe-des-Monts!

  5. Oceans AND Seas • Provide a wide variety of living conditions. • Marine habitats live divided according to the depth of the water. Example: -200m- NO SUNLIGHT, therefore does not effect the environment. - completely dark, average temperature rarely exceeds 4 degrees Celsius. -Surface- Phytoplankton is eaten by all species like crustaceans, fish, jellyfish, mollusks, and some bird species and mammals.

  6. Oceans AND Seas… Ocean Floor- Group of organisms called benthos, it is eaten by mollusks, crustaceans, and certain deep water fish species. - These bottom-dwellers live in coastal areas between 0-350KM from the shore and at a depth of 200KM.

  7. FUN FACT! • These areas are greatly effected by human activity because 80% of fishing is done near the coasts! 

  8. Coral Reefs • They are the oldest biomes in the world, that date back over 200 million years ago. • They contain reach biodiversity containing 500 000 and 2 000 000 plant and animal species. • Invertebrates that have a variety of shapes but all have a central mouth and tentacles. • These corals are mostly found in tropical seas. • They form colonies that contain thousands of individual species and measure several meters in height and diameter.

  9. Coral Reefs… • Reefs are formed of calcium carbonate. • They provide a home, shelter and food to many species and they are a major economic, social and cultural importance to the people who live near by. • Pollution, overfishing, global warming and sedimentation are threatening the survival of these extraordinary biomes.

  10. FUN FACT! • 20% of the worlds reefs have already been destroyed.
