A complete solution for a cycle based waste management system in Oslo
Waste-to-Energy Agency (EGE) • Agency in the City of Oslo, organized under Department of Environmental Affairs and Transport. • Waste-to-Energy plants located at Haraldrud and Klemetsrud. • EGE recovers 250 000 tons of waste yearly, thereby 130 000 tons of Oslo’s household waste. • Destruction of infectious waste from hospitals, and fractions that demand special treatment. • The energy from our plants is utilised in the district heating net in Oslo and as electric power in the electricity grid. • Producing energy from waste is a socio-economic and environmental favourable way to treat waste that cannot otherwise be recovered.
Political objectives in Oslo • 50 % reduction in emissions of greenhouse gases by 2030. • Plan for residual waste treatment - 2006 – 2009: • 50 % recovery of materials in by 2014. • Source sorting of food waste and plastic packaging by the end of 2011. • Increased use of renewable energy: • Basis for increased use of district heating, 1 - 2 TWh. • Change from fossil fuels to renewable fuels for the district heating system.
Scope of development ”EGE 2010” • Optical sorting plant for food waste and plastic packaging • Biogas factory producing biogas (fuel) and biofertilizer from food waste • A new waste incinerator line
