Region HQ City Ecological Footprints Ecological Footprint 45 40 35 30 25 20 15 10 5 0 Portland Salem Roseburg Bend La Grande • The Ecological Footprint is a resource management tool that measures how much land and water area a human population requires to produce the resources it consumes and to absorb its wastes under prevailing technology. • In comparison, the average Ecological Footprint in the USA is 24 acres per person. The Worldwide average is 4.5. • See: http://www.earthday.net/Footprint/index.asp# to calculate your personal footprint. • These values are based on gross generalizations about likely profiles for average citizens in each city. All variables are the same except climate, population size, average driving distance, and average public transmit miles/week, which again, were gross generalizations. Prepared by Mindy Trask.
