Pythagoras. His Life. Pythagoras was born on Samos around 567 B.C. His father Mnesarchus was a gem-crafter. His mother name was Pythias. He moved to Croton around 530 B.C. His Life - Continued. He married a woman of Croton named Theano. They had four children. One son named Telagues

His Life - Continued • He married a woman of Croton named Theano. • They had four children. • One son named Telagues • Three daughters named:Damo,Arignote,& Myia • He died in Metapontum in 475 B.C.

Pythagorean Theorem • The Pythagorean Theorem consists of two legs (A2 & B2) and a hypotenuse (C2)
His Other Studies • He studied mathematics, philosophy, astronomy, the theory of music, and religious elements. • He made other discoveries besides his theorem in music, astronomy, math, and medicine. • Egyptians=Geometry • Phoenicians=Arithmetic • Chaldeans=Astronomy • Magians=Religion
His Followers • Pythagoras’s followers made a select brotherhood for practicing religion and ascetic practices developed by their master. • It was once known as a philosophical school, religious brotherhood, and a political association. • Only the elitist knew what was taught in this brotherhood.
His Followers Continued • It is said that Pythagoras forbid all animal food in this select group of followers. • Almost everything credited to Pythagoras was really made possible by his followers. • His followers were called Pythagoreans.
His Contributions • Nobody really thought that Pythagoras and his discoveries were really that important in the time period that he lived. • Where would we be today, in the math world if Pythagoras had not proved the Pythagorean Theorem??
