  1. Preliminary Designs for A Continuous Passive Motion Lumbar Support Cushion Sara Alford and Heather Shaner University of Wisconsin – Madison Client: Julie Sherry, PT Advisor: Kreg Gruben

  2. Overview • Problem Statement • Background Research • Design Constraints • Preliminary Design Solutions • Evaluation of Design • Final Design and Future Development • Questions

  3. Problem Statement To design a pneumatic support cushion for the lumbar region that undergoes continuous passive motion. The device would be used while in a sitting position at various cycle settings chosen by the user.

  4. Lower Back Pain • Lower back pain effects 70% of Americans • Sitting for extended period of time can be painful • Example: car trips

  5. Continuous Passive Motion • Cycles through range of motion • Reduces stiffness • Pain Gating Theory • Reduces PAIN

  6. McKenzie CPM Roll • OPTP Company • 40 second cycles • Continuous passive motion of spine • Possible to use with car power source

  7. Delivery System Cushion Power Supply Control Panel Pneumatic Pump Tubing Support Cushion Overview of Entire System

  8. Design Constraints • Correct range of motion • Consistent cycling • Durable • Low noise level • Cost

  9. Delivery System • Power Supply • Car’s Cigarette Lighter • Battery • Control Panel • Cycle Settings • Pneumatic Pump • Piston Spring Driven System • Automatic Blood Pressure System

  10. Piston Spring Pump Air Chamber Cushion Tubing Spring

  11. Automatic Blood Pressure Pump • Currently one cycle • Correct pressure range • Durable • Reliable • Built in Control Panel http://www.homemedicaltestsmall.com/Blood_Pressure_Monitor/omron/hem-711ac.htm http://www.homemedicaltestsmall.com

  12. Cushion Designs • Lateral and Vertical Supports • The Gel Pocket • Pressure Valve Compartments

  13. Lateral and Vertical Supports Support Beams Orthogonal to Surface Air entrance to compartments

  14. The Gel Pocket Gel Encasement Air Entrance to Compartments

  15. Pressure Valve Compartments Valved Compartment Air Entrance to Compartments

  16. Evaluation of Delivery System • Accurate • Reliable • Safety • Automatic Release at Max pressure • Quiet and compact

  17. Evaluation of Cushion Designs • Correct Pelvic Rotation • Good Postural Support (Ergonomics) • Inflate/Deflate Similarly Each Cycle • Durable Materials • Simplicity • Cost

  18. Design Matrix

  19. Final Design – Delivery System • Power system is already developed • Can handle range of pressures • Control panel exists • Lightweight • Durable

  20. Final Design – The Gel Pocket • Pelvic can be aligned easily • Gel forms to fit body shape • Air provides desired continuous passive motion • Durable materials • Lacks a controlled air flow mechanism

  21. Future Development • Better design plans drafted • Specific dimensions for cushion • Material research • Plastics • Gels • Programming pump for various cycles
