A Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) can either be a severe or mild brain injury due to some sort of sudden trauma causing damage to the brain.

How damage to the brain can occur: Damage can occur from a sudden, violent hit from an object of some sort, or when an object pierces the skull and enters the tissue of the brain.
Glasgow Coma Scale • The Glasgow Coma Scale is used to measure the severity of the injury. • The Post Traumatic Amnesia Scale (table on the bottom) can sometimes be a better scale for measuring the severity by how much amnesia the person experiences.
