  1. Parallel and Perpendicular Equations 5.5

  2. Conditional Statements • If-then statement • If it is raining, then it is wet outside. • Converse* • The converse of a conditional statements switches the hypothesis and conclusion. (NOT ALWAYS TRUE) • If it is wet outside, then it is raining

  3. Parallel Converse • If two nonvertical lines in the same plane have the same slope, then they are parallel • Converse: If two nonvertical lines in the same plan are parallel, then they have the same slope.

  4. Write an equation • Write an equation of the line that passes through (-3, -5) and is parallel to the line y = 3x -1 • Step 1: Identify slope. • Step 2: find y-intercept (plug in point) • Write equation M = 3 -5 = 3(-3) + b +9 +9 4 = b Y = 3x + 4

  5. Try it out • Write an equation of the line that passes through (-2, 11) and is parallel to the line y = -x +5 Y = -x + 9

  6. Perpendicular Converse • If two nonvertical lines in the same plane have slopes that are negative reciprocals, then the lines are perpendicular. • Converse: If two nonvetical lines in the same plane are perpendicular, then their slopes are negative reciprocals.

  7. Write an equation • Write an equation of the line that passes through (4,-5) and is perpendicular to the line y = 2x + 3. • Step 1: Identify slope • Step 2: Identify y-intercept • Step 3: Write equation -1/2 -5 = -1/2(4) + b +2 +2 -3 = b Y = -1/2(x) -3

  8. Try it out • Write an equation of the line that passes through (4,3) an is perpendicular to the line y = 4x – 7. Y = -1/4(x) +4

  9. Determine Stuff • Determine if the lines are parallel or perpendicular or neither. • Hint – find slopes • Y = 5x – 3 • X +5y = 2 Y = -1/5(x) + 2 The lines are perpendicular

  10. Try it out • Are these two lines perpendicular, parallel, or neither? • 2y + x = -12 • 2y = 3x - 8 neither
